Error - Error Reading File

Symptom:

The symptom (Error) usually happens when the computer is processing a great amount of data, creating temp files, and moving records.

Information:  "ERROR READING FILE" is typically network or workstation related. The workstation has lost it's place on the network or a data packets are being lost.  "Error reading file" indicates a slow, dropped or unreliable network connection that prevents VFP from reading from a file that it thinks is open.

Possible causes: We have seen this many times caused by: 1. A bad or chattering network card in a workstation 2. Bad or stretched cabling between the machine and the server 3. Bad connection at the hub or the port connection on the server. 4. Bad cable connectors on the workstation. 5. Networks with Intel Celeron or AMD chips on the workstations.  These things are sometimes very hard to pin point and will take a hardware specialist some time to pinpoint the problem. In some instances, network people have had to set up monitors to watch packets travel on the network (a device called a "sniffer").|

Solution:

If you can get past this message please close ALL programs and restart the computer. If you cannot get past the error, you will have to just restart the computer without closing anything.  If possible, once that is done go to another machine and attempt to do the same task from there to see if the error follows you.

If this happens after 30 minutes or some period of inactivity, it's likely that the user's network card is powering down to save energy. Disable the power saving or sleep feature of the network adapter and see if it helps.  All the newer network cards have this capability and they're all coming set with it turned-on by default.   The power-saving option you need to disable for the Network Card is found in the System Hardware Screen, under the Network Adapters, not the power-saving screen.  You can also get to it by right clicking on your Local Area Connection (and/or Wireless) - select Properties, and hit the Configure button at the top next to the network card.  Uncheck the top box under Power Management.  In power-saving, choose the Always On function.  You can let the monitor sleep, but not the HD or Windows.
